Master of Intercultural Ministry

About this course

The Master of Intercultural Ministry (MIM) is an AQF Level 9 award. It is designed for those who hold a graduate certificate in the field of philosophy and studies in religion, who wish to pursue a further qualification in intercultural studies, as part of continuing education for ministry.

The Master of Intercultural Ministry focuses on building intercultural capacity for people involved in leading or ministering to others across cultural divides. Students may be seeking skills in intercultural studies to enhance their professional work or to engage in effective ministry.

The Master of Intercultural Ministry is not available to international students.

Research Period




An applicant for admission to candidature for the Master of Intercultural Ministry shall have an AQF Level 8 award (Graduate Certificate) in the field of religion and philosophy (Australian Standard Classification of Education field 0917– Philosophy and Religious Studies).

 

English Proficiency

Applicants whose entry qualifications were obtained in an institution where English is not the language of instruction normally require a minimum IELTS (or equivalent) score of 7.0 in all bands of the test.

The Master of Intercultural Ministry requires the completion of 72 credit points.

The 72 credit points (8 units) shall include

  • four units (36 credit points) taken from the list of approved *Master of Intercultural Ministry specialist units;
  • two practical units (18 credit points)  focused on **intercultural practice in the context of the candidate’s work, ministry or mission; and
  • two elective units (18 credit points) from the 8100 and 9200 series in the SCD Schedule of Units

Graduates will have specialised knowledge and skills for further learning in intercultural ministry and research, and the ability to apply such knowledge and skills in an intercultural context.

 

Knowledge

Graduates will have

  • an integrated understanding of an advanced body of knowledge related to intercultural contexts.
  • an expert understanding of the principles and methods of inquiry applicable to intercultural theory and their application to real-world ministry practice.

 

Skills

Graduates will demonstrate specialised cognitive and technical skills in intercultural ministry, so that they are able independently to:

  • analyse critically, reflect on and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories associated with intercultural ministry.
  • implement with discrimination established intercultural theories to provide effective engagement in intercultural ministry.
  • interpret and transmit intercultural knowledge, skills, and ideas through coherent and sustained leadership to specialist and non-specialist audiences

 

Applications of Knowledge and Skills

Graduates will have the ability to:

  • apply knowledge and skills in a way that demonstrates initiative, autonomy, expert judgement adaptability, and accountability in the field of intercultural ministry.
  • plan and execute a substantial research or field-based project in an area of intercultural ministry.

A candidate may seek credit up to a maximum of 18 credit points in the Master of Intercultural Ministry.

Credit can only be granted for units that are from an equivalent award or institution and have outcomes, content, demand hours, and assessment equivalent to that of units in the SCD award.

Credit for Recognised Prior Learning may be granted subject to a successful application.

 

Exit Point

Graduate Certificate in Intercultural Ministry (36 credit points).

The Master of Intercultural Ministry is not offered to international students on an Australian student visa.

 

The Master of Intercultural Ministry is offered through the individual colleges and an application for enrolment must be made to the Registrar of the teaching institution. The registrar will be able to help you with any information regarding your study, including fees, units, mode of delivery, and timetable.

 

A domestic student at Sydney College of Divinity is designated as full-time if enrolled in three units (27 credit points) or more in a semester or part-time if enrolled in less than three units (27 credit points) per semester. SCD offers a wide range of units and students have the option to study one or more units across the colleges delivering SCD awards, whilst enrolled with one college.
