The process of applying for candidature must commence only after you have discussed your proposed study with the Research Director Prof James Harrison.

A PDF Research Degree Application for Admission form is available if you want to submit a hard copy of the application. Our preference and recommendation are for you to submit your HDR admission application using the below online application.

Official documents (eg. testamurs, birth certificate, passport, transcripts, IELTS results, etc) must be certified copies. Individual files should not be larger than 1 MB. Section 5 - Summary of Research Intentions
Indicate the broad outlines of your proposed thesis topic. Please provide sufficient information for the Research Committee to determine the general suitability of the topic for the degree and the availability of appropriate resources and supervision.

For example :
- a Biblical study might use grammatical/ historical exegesis, as well as sociological, historical, theological, feminist, literary, and post-colonial analyses.
- a Church History study might use a primary source approach, concentrating on particular writings of the Church Fathers or documents of the Vatican councils, accompanied by theological, sociological, historical or Marxist analyses of the evidence.
- a Theology study might adopt a ‘biblical theology’ approach involving elements of exegetical and doctrinal analysis; a ‘historical theology’ or ‘dogmatic theology’ approach might concentrate on the primary sources (original writings) of particular theologians or theological movements; a ‘philosophical’ theology approach might incorporate existentialist, post-modern, or scientific perspectives on an issue or doctrine, or approach the topic from the perspective of a particular philosophical thinker (e.g. Heidegger; Derrida; René Girard).
- a pastoral study might employ clinical analysis based on secondary literature casestudies, or employ evidence gained by interview or conduct clinical analysis (requiring thereby clearance from the Research Ethics Committee), accompanied by sociological, biblical and theological analysis.

Withdrawal and Refunds
The Sydney College of Divinity Refund and Withdrawal Policy has been developed in accordance with Section 28 of the ESOS Act 2000 (as amended in 2007). The Policy states that if the student submits in writing a withdrawal request by 4.00pm on the Census Date to the Registrar, the tuition fee will be refunded in full, however a withdrawal fee may be charged to the student. The refund will be paid to the student within four weeks of the date of withdrawal. If a student withdraws after 4.00pm on the Census Date of the unit in question, a Fail grade will be given and tuition fees will not be refunded. Privacy and Right to Information
Sydney College of Divinity is subject to the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 (NSW) and the Health Records and Information Privacy Act 2002 (NSW). Sydney College of Divinity collects your personal information and, in some circumstances, information regarding your health, to assist in the assessment of your application and, if you are successful, offering you a course place and recording your acceptance of that offer. The other purposes of collection include corresponding with you, attending to day-to-day administrative matters, informing you about your courses and other aspects of admission or enrolment and complying with legislative reporting requirements. While your personal information is generally collected from you, the Sydney College of Divinity also collects information about you (such as official records of study) from other educational institutions that you have attended for the purpose of verifying the supporting documentation you have provided with your application. The information you provide in your application (and, if your application is successful, any offer letter) is recorded on the student database and may be disclosed to organisations, including: government departments (such as the Department of Immigration and Citizenship and the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations and agencies involved in administering the ESOS legislation; external organisations (such as other tertiary education institutions) where disclosure is necessary to verify your previous qualifications and other supporting documentation provided with your application; and where required by law. If you do not provide the required information, the Sydney College of Divinity will not be able to consider you for admission or to enrol you.
