Research at the Sydney College of Divinity continues to grow. As the Sydney College of Divinity invests in building its ethos, people and resources, the capacity to be transformative in its impact through excellence in research continues to advance.

Research investment

Library

The Research Degree Library Resources Grant is used by the Sydney College of Divinity, in consultation with the supervisor and candidate, to build up the research resources in the topic area of the candidate. The grant is made by the Sydney College of Divinity to the nominated library each semester in which the candidate is enrolled. The Grant has helped library collections across its colleges to procure specialised and quality material to assist current and future research students.

SCD Press

The SCD Press is the publishing house of the Sydney College of Divinity and furthers our objective of excellence in research, scholarship, and education by publishing a significant program of publications.It provides opportunities for Sydney College of Divinity faculty and research students, and interested academics from around the globe to publish in a range of peer-reviewed publications. The journals and other publications are of the highest quality and cover diverse topics building on our ecumenical identity.

Centre for Gospels and Research (CGAR)

Sydney College of Divinity launched the Centre for Gospels and Acts Research in late 2017. It promotes research into the four Gospels and, due to the connections with Luke, the Book of Acts. The Centre for Gospels and Acts Research provides a platform for faculty and students to engage in research in the Gospels and Acts, books that are central to the discipline of Biblical Studies, and to share their interests and discoveries in classes, conferences, and publications.

Publications

The SCD Research and Scholarship database records peer-reviewed, scholarly and research publications by the faculty. Records for the past five years and more demonstrate a consistent level in both numbers of outputs and in the quality of those outputs. Many books and articles have been published by leading publishers and in world renowned journals ensuring that our research continues to meet the standards of ERA while fostering integration in an ecclesial context and thus advancing the Kingdom of God through excellence in research.

Academic staff

The Sydney College of Divinity has one of the largest bodies of theological staff in the country. SCD embraces the ideal of research-led teaching and the value of making an original contribution to knowledge in the discipline and the teaching of it. Faculty are research active and many are ordained ministers, thus encompassing a holistic mission that aims to raise up the next generation of theological scholars and teachers in diverse ecumenical contexts and to produce creative interdisciplinary thinkers and leaders who will transform the professions, social agencies, and pedagogic institutions in which they serve.

Excellence in research

The Sydney College of Divinity continues to strive for excellence in research. Research Writers Workshops were introduced in 2019 to grow our research culture to a more developed stance positioning us among the best. Two major conferences, God’s Exemplary Graduates and Discerning the Trends, were held in 2019 and the proceedings of those conferences were published by SCD Press (Wondering about God Together and the Journal of Gospels and Acts Research). The Sydney College of Divinity also partners and collaborates with other colleges, theological bodies and universities to provide opportunities for students and faculty. Excellence in research enables graduates to integrate their faith at the highest academic level with their professions as they take their learning into the community they serve and make a positive impact.
